Take Him Out

Description

EDIT: Notice anything different about this picture? I improved on some of my color choices based on suggestions from ~Ocarinak. Most noticeably, I changed the color of the tree canopy in the back, which I thought was too bright compared to the rest of the background, and kind of detracted from the main characters in the foreground. I also changed the leaves to make them less clashy. I think the picture looks better now. :)

Hey look! It's an entry for 's Super Smash Bros Brawl contest! :O Yes, I did enter after all. Even though it took me a while, I just had to enter, because of my huge love of Super Smash Bros. And I'm so glad I did, because I love how this picture came out!

Now let me explain. The requirements of the contest were to draw a concept pic for the next game, basically, with four characters you'd like to see. So I got to thinking about what new characters they could have for all the different franchises. When I came to Mario, I thought that the series already has quite enough characters, but they'll doubtless end up adding some more anyway. I tried to think of a likely Mario character the developers would put in, and a disturbing thought suddenly hit me. Petey Piranha has been showing up in just about every Mario spinoff lately... so what if whoever it was who had the big idea to shove him into every Mario sport, persuaded (or forced, more likely) the developers to put him in SSBB? I mean, I'd like to think it was unlikely. I have nothing against Petey as an enemy, but he consistently turns out to be pretty darn useless and annoying as a playable character, and I don't know WHY he keeps showing up everwhere. So I figured if he was in SSBB, he'd annoy every other player and they'd try to take him out at once. And that's where the idea for this pic was born.

Here's an explanation of the concepts I had for this pic. All of the other characters are ones that I'd really love to see in the game, and they're all teaming up against Petey. He knows he's in for it.

Petey Piranha (Mario series): Petey, if he DOES land in this game through some wicked twist of fate, would probably be a very heavy and slow character. He'd have some strong close-range bite attacks, and even some long distance sludge-vomit projectiles! Um, yay.

Krusha (Donkey Kong series): I want to see some sort of playable Kremling in SSBB. Whether it's K. Rool, Krusha, your average Kritter, or whatever. I want to see it. I'm not sure if it'll happen, but I've kinda set myself up mentally for this, and when it doesn't happen I'm gonna feel disappointed. I guess I should stop raising my hopes so much... but I can dream! Anyway, Krusha would be a great addition to SSBB because he's just BUILT for smashing people. Seriously, that's his job! He's Krusha, after all! I think he could have some great physical attacks, and possibly have his orange-bomb gun from DK64's multiplayer.

Jeff (Earthbound): Ness really needs another character from his game to keep him company! I chose Jeff, because I just really like him. :D With his wide variety of technological weapons, I think he could have some great long-distance attacks. He could probably throw bombs and bottle rockets too. Nice.

Meowth (Pokemon): Now, they'll probably add some new Pokemon into the game. Meowth is one of my favorites, and I think it would be a good choice for SSBB. It's a very well-known Pokemon, which makes it a good candidate. Also, Meowth is cute, but not nauseatingly so (Pichu, I'm lookin' at you!), and it's still a fiesty Pokemon with agression and attitude. It would be even better if it was Team Rocket's Meowth in particular. You could tell it was him because of the voice, but he could behave more wildly, with some great clawing, biting, and pouncing attacks. He could even have some sort of Pay Day attack, perhaps.

The stage: Gusty Glade (DK series) The Donkey Kong Country series had tons of extremely beautiful, varied, and creative environments, so why have DK's SSB levels always been jungle jungle jungle? It's time for that to change. The developers could really take advantage of some of the interesting worlds of the DK universe. This stage is, of course, based on the level Gusty Glade from my beloved Donkey Kong Country 2. (Even though it has more of that "Web Woods" color scheme, if you wanna get technical.) I'd love to see how Crocodile Isle's enchanted forest would translate into SSBB, and I think they could make a greeeeat remix out of the beautiful theme music for the forest levels. But I digress. Anyway, level design. Not shown in this picture, there would be cliffs on either side of the playing field, though the forest in the background would keep continuing on. Keeping in the spirit of the DKC2 level, the leaves would constantly blow around, but now and then the wind would unexpectedly pick up and start blowing the players in one direction or the other. Think of how the tree in Green Greens blows you in SSBM, except this wind is unavoidable. I'm also thinking there could be a blast barrel floating around back and forth under the platform.

---------------

So anyway, I've been working so hard on this pic the past few days. I was going through an artistic rut when I first started, and I just got fed up with doing the lineart by hand. So I scanned it and did the lineart on the computer, which I haven't done in a long time. But I'm glad I did. I had so much fun making this pic that it got me out of my mini artist's block. The background was very experimental for me, but I really like it. What do you think?

Please Enjoy!
